Was VandeVelde Fredo?
- Mononoke

Fredo generated more offense. Vandevelde was the horse's head.

My biggest complaint about the Hartnell trade was exactly the same as the JVR trade. The return was far below what I would have considered acceptable.

Most of what you posted I agree with. There's no way to tell what would happen if a trade didn't happen. That's all supposition which was my point. I have to guage the trade on what was traded and Umberger was shot. If you wanted to move Hartnell for cap relief (which I think was mostly Berube who didn't want Harts around) then take your time and get the best deal you can.

No matter what happened in the universe after the trade it's still a really bad one.

For sure. Both were bad trades and I don't think they purposely made bad trades, though I do doubt Hextall actually expected Umberger to be good offensively

I thought Holmgren was pressed to find defense and Burke fleeced him after the draft turned up nothing else. He took what he could get.

Honestly, I couldn't find any reason to make the Hartnell trade when Hextall did or for the return he got. I just don't see any rush there. I always felt (could be wrong) that Berube wanted Harts out before camp because he thought he was a bad influence on the other players discipline. That led to a bad trade.

And listen, I'm certainly not killing him for it. His draft picks will tell the story of what kind of GM he is in the next few seasons then he'll have to sharpen his trade skills which up to this point seem sorely lacking imo.

No matter what...needing to make a trade is a recipe for disaster.

Hexys amateur scouting is Wayne Simmonds and his pro scouting has been Chris Vandevelde

I agree with that. That trade made no hockey sense and the piddling cap space and years meant nothing at the time. They just didn't want Hartnell any more. Bottom line is the Flyers have traded three left wings good for 25-30 goals in five years. It hasn't worked well up to this point and the team won't be better this year because of it.
